Biography

born, November 1940.

I was brought up in Paddington, London, Nuneaton then Isleworth, Middlesex.  I lived for thirty years near Fitzroy Square, London from 1994 in Uplyme, Devon.  Since April 2013 in Exeter .

Art education     I attended the School of Art at Twickenham Technical College, for one year preliminary study, then three years NDD course.

Experience     Worked for many years in advertising and studios then free-lance illustration and graphic design.

Approach     Over the years, I have found that I most enjoy doing watercolour and line drawing.  I also like to work in other mediums from time to time, and in both figurative and abstract modes.

I like to express feeling through landscapes and seascapes and the disposition of people and objects within the composition.  With abstracts I like to show mood through use of colour and shape.  I work largely from sketchbooks, but I also enjoy being out in the air and observing everything around me.

I am still looking for a way of expressing my response to the landscape and objects that interest me.  I do not stick to one ‘style’ of work, and I think that this helps me to keep the vision fresh.  I do however try to produce several works in the same ‘style’ and on the same theme.   I enjoy being in ‘unregarded’ settings, like boatyards, dealers yards, scrap-yards for metal and cars; abandoned greenhouses, graveyards and so on.  One can find interesting conjunctions of objects, colour and texture in these yards.  The seafront always provides wonderful light and mood and many interesting details.
